Along the Riverbank
Shy Mole leaves her underground home to discover the delights of springtime and soon befriends the kind-hearted Water Rat, steadfast Otter, and wise Badger. Their peaceful life along the river is soon disrupted by the irrepressible Toad, whose obsession with motor cars leads to disaster — and eventually lands him in jail.
While Toad is away, a gang of mischievous weasels and stoats takes over Toad Hall. With the help of his loyal friends, Toad must escape, return home, and summon the courage to reclaim what has been lost.
Filled with humour, friendship, adventure, and song, this lively adaptation celebrates loyalty, community, and the simple sweetness of home.

“Take the Adventure, heed the call.”

The Author's Note
A few words from the writer about the heart behind the play

"The Wind in the Willows" has led generations of readers to discover the strength of friendship, the comfort of home, and the excitement of discovering the wider world. This welcoming, playful, and meaningful new stage adaptation invites young performers to revel in Grahame’s tale in a way that is both faithful to the original, and accessible to students from Grades 6 through 12. At its heart, the script draws out the idea of logos—the sense that the world has an underlying order and meaning. This theme is expressed through the restoration of harmony—Toad’s reckless individualism giving way to humility, the friends’ loyalty to one another, and the reclaiming of Toad Hall as a true home and community. These ideas are played out through story and action rather than overt instruction. The script follows the episodic structure of the original novel, shaping it into a clear theatrical journey through a series of connected adventures along the River, the Wild Wood, and beyond. This structure allows younger students to engage through humor, physical action, and ensemble storytelling. The play is written for up to ten actors, with an equal balance of roles and shared narration, and all parts are written with flexible gender casting to support practical school casting. The play may be performed with or without music. Optional musical numbers are suggested within the script, including an opening ensemble piece celebrating the River, a lively song for Toad and his friends on the open road, a Christmas carol, and a reflective closing number focused on belonging and home. These moments may be sung, spoken rhythmically, or omitted entirely without affecting the narrative.
