This stage version of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” is much more than a magical adventure story. The adventure story is there, and it’s wonderful, but Narnia is a classic because of the great and complex truths that lie beneath it. It examines human nature’s capacity for both great evil and great good. This stage adaptation not only recognizes these same truths, but brings them into the open on-stage.

How does it do this? Lewis' tale is ultimately a story of sin and redemption, humility and forgiveness. The heart of the story is the willing self-sacrifice of the great lion Aslan to save a boy who has betrayed him - and through him, to save the whole land of Narnia. The entire plot only makes sense if the scene of Aslan's death and resurrection is given central focus. While many other stage adaptations concentrate on the children's path to becoming kings and queens, this reduces the whole story to a superficial level. Instead of focusing on merely human glory and power, we have followed Lewis’ lead in structuring the entire story as before, during, or after Aslan’s sacrifice – making it clear what impact his action has on the Pevensie children, the battle against the White Witch, and Narnia as a whole.
